This is a great site. This is an outstanding collection of pictures. I remember the places on base and in Kenitra. I was a dependent at NAS Port Lyautey from 1961 to 1963. My father was Col. Richard S. Johnson, USMC. He was the Commanding Officer of the Marine Barracks.

I was 14 years old when we arrived. I started high school and was a member of the Boy Scout troop on base Troop 214. We had a great time and rambled all over the base and into Kenitra. Sometimes the Marine Guards at the gate would see us running back from town being chased by a small gang of boys from the prison just outside the gate. The Marine guards knew us, as my friend Richard Evans, was the son of the Marine Sergeant-Major of the Marine Barracks. The Marine Guards made sure we made it back without being caught by the crowd behind us. I imagine I knew some members of the squadron who may have served as one of our Scout Masters and Assistant Scout Masters. It was a great place to grow up.

I remember lots of the kids who I was in high school with there. But there is only one sailor that I remember. He was ‘Whitey.’ He was one of our scout leaders and had a shock of white hair. Much later when I was running the Environmental Office for NAVAIR, I was down in Jacksonville on a tour, we went to what I believe was his restaurant, “Whitey’s.” I asked if he was there, but they said not on that day.
