City, State: Lexington, VA Comments: This is a great site. This is an outstanding collection of pictures. I remember the places on base and in Kenitra. I was a dependent at NAS Port Lyautey from 1961 to 1963. My father was Col. Richard S. Johnson, USMC. He was the Commanding Officer of the Marine Barracks. I was 14 years old when we arrived. I started high school and was a member of the Boy Scout troop on base Troop 214. We had a great time and rambled all over the base and into Kenitra. Sometimes the Marine Guards at the gate would see us running back from town being chased by a small gang of boys from the prison just outside the gate. The Marine guards knew us, as my friend Richard Evans, was the son of the Marine Sergeant-Major of the Marine Barracks. The Marine Guards made sure we made it back without being caught by the crowd behind us. I imagine I knew some members of the squadron who may have served as one of our Scout Masters and Assistant Scout Masters. It was a great place to grow up. I remember lots of the kids who I was in high school with there. But there is only one sailor that I remember. He was ‘Whitey.’ He was one of our scout leaders and had a shock of white hair. Much later when I was running the Environmental Office for NAVAIR, I was down in Jacksonville on a tour, we went to what I believe was his restaurant, “Whitey’s.” I asked if he was there, but they said not on that day.

City, State: Bartonville, TX Comments: Greetings - I was in contact with Mr. Prather about eight or nine years ago, and forwarded the picture of my sister, kathy Matter, and her friend Melinda Mench, being flow by my father and "Uncle Fred" to Rota Spain for the Girl Scout's trip. We lived there 1958 to 1960 when Dad flew us back to NAS Norfolk. Flight Crew were "Jerry" who had a big mustache, John who was tall, lanky and very quiet, and one other I can't remember. Long flight: Stopped @ Lajes and Argentia. My best friends while going to school there was Greg Roberts (son of Commander Ray Roberts) and Pete Davis (son of Chief Davis). Nice to see this sight is still up. I'm converting some of the numerous color slides I have from this time to digital format. Many pics of the picnic parties that were had. I remember the Benner and Laski families as well.
