To All Vr-24 Ship Mates,

I made a mistake in my message about Capt Sperling.  He died on Monday, March 17, 2008.

The services for the Skipper will be on 27 March at the All Faith's Chapel on NAS Pensacola, at 0930.  Interment will follow at Barrancas at 1015.

I will pass on any more information when I receive it.

Chuck Kenyon

To All VR-24 Shipmates,

I have some bad news to pass on.  Capt. David Sperling died Monday (March 10 2008) at home with his family at his side.

The Pensacola News Journal should have the notice in the paper Wed. or Thur.  See pnj.com for the notice.

Hey GUYS, This is Gene Walsh served under Capt Hatch in Naples
back in the day when we had a football team THE CAPO FLYERS
do you remember those days when we played Airforce, USS Littlerock and the Marines. I was a C1A Plane Captain. Hey shout out to John Fisher who trained me. I was there in 1975-1977 when I got out we had just moved to Sigonella, Remember when
the Kennedy hit the Belnap and had to help out those poor guys who got hurt or even worse we took off the bodies of our fallen
brothers who got killed on that mishap. Hey not  to brag but do you remember that homerun I hit against the officers to win that softball game...now that was a great memory. Anyone who was in naples back in 75-77 give me a holler . This is avaition 2nd class machinistmate  Gene Walsh

I remember one night there was a detachment of Marines using the trailers we used when we first moved to Sig that were along side of our hanger.  The generator was running and was spitting sparks out of the exhaust.  As the evening progressed, I noticed an orange glow along the fence next to the paint locker.  The sparks coming from the generator had started a fire in the grass which in turn started the fence burning.  Not only was the paint locker just on the other side, but the fuel sample bottles were located on the side of the fence with the fire.  What was funny is that the fire department could not find the fire.  They thought we had an aircraft on fire and was driving around the line looking for a burning plane.  Someone from the line shack had to chase them down and show them where the fire was located.  By the time they got there, we had the fire out.

I guess we sometimes overlook things when we get old. I was in VR-24 from 76-79. I originally posted it as 77-79. I remember you Rocky. Last time I saw you was in Alameda. After I left Sig I went to VRC-30 and used to fly out of North Island. In and out of Alameda a lot. Seems to me you were working on C9's there weren't you? Kind of foggy on that. You might not remember me much from Sig. I was AC on T39's and worked in the shack for Senior Chief Harding. Let's see if any of these names ring a bell for any of you all who were there during that time. Dave Peck, Kenny Bess, Dave Gossett, Jay Galinos, Jeff Baker, David Hale, Chuck Kenyon, Carlos Cardoza, Mike Knowlton, Tony Sanfelippe, Debbie Barnes (Gossett), CJ Vanvleet, Jim Ikard, Chip Shafer, lot's more but my brain just went on squawking standby. Those were the days huh?

OK group, I was not in VR-24 but had some SEL/RES at NAF Detroit that flew in 24.  I am a "DOC" and fly with VAW-77 at NAS Atlanta,  looking to buy a C-1A COD "War Bird" and need to talk with a hydraulics guy who can brief me on how much work it took to keep a COD in the air!

Great site!

I have run across so many names of old friends on this site. Brings back great memories for me and my wife. Those of you who remember me feel free to drop me a line at salty1dog@comcast.net I was in VR-24 in Sig from July '77 until August '79. I was an ADR2 at the time but fell in absolute awe of the CT-39G so I put in to become Aircrew and left 3 years later as a Natops Evaluator. Dave Hale was my sponser when I first arrived. I remember I had to be medivac out of Sig after only 24hrs in country because of some kind of bacteria. Spent 15 days in the hospital in Naples while my wife had to sweat out not knowing anything. She was 6 months pregnant and had a 3yr old as well. She was staying at the hotel Bonacorsi in Pedara but the gang took good care of her. Lot's more memories. I loved it and would do it all over again. Take care and God Bless.
