Hi,

I'm having a nostalgia moment - my dad  was George Britt - served in Navy on VR-24 in Port Lyautey from 56-58. I can remember the old hotel on the beach that we had to stay in before getting a place on the base,- playing on the beach when we shouldn't have been there- going down to the big stone jetty jutting out into the ocean- my dad coming and going- my sister being born- the outdoor movie theater- the spray trucks coming in the evening to spray for mosquitos- the hospital was across the street and we went over when the circus came to the hospital - we would play in the trenches in the grassy area surrounding the hospital perimeter -until we discovered the ants.

I have my dad's beer stein that was given to him, I believe as a safety award for 1957-1958 listing all the places served by the airline with winged Mercury in center-, the safety award patch on other side above a fez with JM airplane in front of it.

I recently received a newspaper article that was published in the Northhampton Gazette in 1955, from my Aunt, about my dad and the work he did in the Navy for the airline.

I was only 10 when he passed away in a car accident in Maryland, so now I know a little more of what he did in the Navy and I am very proud of  him and all VR-24 servicemen. Thanks for letting me have my moment, and thank you all for all you did for the world and the USA. God Bless you all!!

Shipmates:     I served in VR-24 and VR-24 Det between Auigust 54 and April 1957.  I live in Omaha, and suggest a possible reunion or get-together here.  It's in the middle of most of us, and offers a range of good possibilities from hotels, golf, military interest and great food.  I have requested planning materials from the City, and members of local Fleet Reserve branch would also assist.  If this lights your fire, send me an email response.  Sincerely,  Darrell Brock

I was stationed at Hendon Airdrome from September 1952 until February 1953 when I was transferred, along with several shipmates, to Naples where I remained until October 1953.   In both bases, I was assigned to the AT shack, except for a couple months on the line crew at Naples.
While at Hendon, I experienced the December "Killer Fog" when all London transportation was shut down for three days and, as I had the duty, I had to remain on the base for the duration of the shut down.
Another memory of Hendon is the Friday afternoon volley ball games amoung the crew, accompanied by kegs of beer flown in from Germany by the skipper; also a Christmas holiday flight to Copenhagen for a weekend liberty.
Roberto Lopez and Don Wurmser were two of my good buddies that also made the transfer to Naples.
Five years ago I visited London at the end of a cruise and went to the the RAF Museum which is now located at the Hendon Airdrome site.
I'd be glad to hear from anyone who was on board with me in 1952-1953.

Checking in, again, but looks like my previous entry was marked "private" for some reason. Leaving my new email address because my other one was hacked and had to be eliminated. Any shipmates from 53-55, give me a buzz.
