City, State: Virginia Beach Comments: Assigned to VR-24 from August 1975 to September 1977. Worked in the Personnel Office with Chief English, who was a pleasure to work for. Capt Batch and Capt Sperling were the CO's during my time there as well as CDR Weaver right before I left. My time in VR-24 contains so many great memories. I got out of the Active Duty side in 1979 and joined the Reserves in 1983 and retired in 2014, with 35 years total service. Time sure flies too fast, but I wouldn't trade any of my time in the Navy for anything. I have lived in Virginia Beach since 1983, and now work at PSD Norfolk, processing Reservists being recalled to Active Duty. Looking forward to my "second retirement"!
City, State: Orlando, Fl. Comments: I served as an ADR2 in VR24 during the Port Lyautey and Rota days, 1962-64 and my enlistment ended in August, 1964. I'd transferred from HS7 at NAS Norfolk, USS Randolph (CVS-15). VR24 had C130's and R5D's (C54's) and crews overnighted off-base in off-base apartment housing on the occasions we overnighted at Naples.

City, State: Garden City, Kansas Comments: I did not serve with VR-24, but while at Rota I had a lot of friends in VR-24. I was a Corpsman at the base hospital and played on the base soccer team with about five or six of the guys from '24. I remember John Levy (GK), Robert Smith (fullback), Ens. Conroy (Striker) and an Englishman (Striker) whose first name was Ed. Cannot remember his last name. Two other Corpsman from the hospital were also on the squad, Phil Ballenski (Fullback) and Terry Castro (Midfielder) along with Dr. Ben Jones. Along with several really good players from the Holland and the Port Dept we had a hell of a squad. Think of you guys often! Am semi-retired now after 40 years in healthcare as a hospital administrator. Right down there on the bottom of the ocean with lawyers! Hope all are doing well. God bless all of you that served us so well!
City, State: Rockford, Illinois Comments: Great web site. Some of the very best, most professional sailors (and their families ) on any planet ,served in VR-24. Was luck to have had the privilege of serving with a few. Maybe because they had so much fun (most of them any way ) they didn't realize how good they really were.
City, State: foley, alabama Comments: Is there anyone living near the Pensacola area interested in a get-together? I was thinking lunch at the Navy Aviation meuseum, as I believe that only military ID folks are allowed at this time. Please express your thoughts on the guestbook . My time frame in the squadron was 1954-1957, both Napoli and Lyautey
City, State: Milton, Florida Comments: I was with VR 24 in Port Lyautey, Morocco from Apr. 1959 til Dec. 1962 as an ADR 2 flying on our R5D's, R4Q's and GV1U's as plane capt/engineer. I was again sent to VR 24 Det. Rota as an ADRC on shore duty, no flying. Best and probably the best known squadron in the Med. for many years.
City, State: Hooks Texas Homepage URL: none Comments: Merry Christmas to all my old friends and even my enemies that i served with in Napoli, Sunny Sig and Rota. I was very lucky to have served under Captain Sperling who was the best CO in my 24 years. I would love to hear from any of my old squadron mates and anyone with info on Robert "brig rat" Lawson or as he was known by Bo Lawson from Buchannon Holler West "by God" Virginia
City, State: Ivoryton Connecticut Comments: I was an Aviation Electrician in the H53 VOD SQD from 1978 to 1981. Truly a great first tour with some of the most talented people I ever knew. Retired in Nov 1999 and would like to hear from anyone. |
