I was with VR-24 Det Rota from 1979 to 1984. I was a AD. E-2 when I got there, an E-5 when I left. I worked for Chief Robert Green and AD1 Lenny Dack. They were my mentors. I'm also looking for contact info for alot of our shipmates. Some of the people I'm looking for are ( I may butcher a few names) Ed Wohlfiel, Jeff Scott, John Bivins, Bill Cornwall and a lot of others that skip my mind. I took a lot of photos in Rota and after the Holidays I will try to post them on my Facebook page. I will label the album VR-24 Det Rota. So be pacent patient. All shipmates are welcome to look. Thanks to this site I found a long lost friend Rich Reiman that I was stationed with at Brunswick ME.
Merry Christmas everyone.
PS One of my biggest regrets in life is not keeping in touch with my friends and shipmates along the way. Smooth Sailing every one.

Found this sight and it brought back so many fond memories of VR-24 and Sicily.  Seems like only yesterday but, sadly it has been almost TWENTY years!
Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to all.

I served with VR-24-Det Rota from 04/76 to 03/79 first as an AE-2 Loadmaster, then NATOPS-Instructor and finally NATOPS-Evaluator, Loadmaster. I was given my check ride by AMH-2 Greg Raines. My first work center supervisor was AEC Gary West, followed by AEC Jeff Homewood. The first O-in-C was CDR Haff followed by CDR Wigfall... CDR Wigfall was one of the finest men I ever served under...just as a personal observation you understand. We worked hard, we flew hard and we played hard. It didn't take long for my wife and I to figure out that once I left the house with my flight suit on it was only an estimated guess as to when I'd get back. My first flight was all it took. It had been somehow overlooked to tell me to pack a suitcase any time you leave Rota: My first flight was supposed to be a turn-around to Naples - Suurrree it was... a hydraulic leak kept us there for three days. Lucky for me our Radioman was also my sponsor AE-1 Mike Stevens and he was wearing levis under his flightsuit and was kind enough to loan them to me. I packed for a week every flight after that. It was by far and away the best three years of my career and sadly the last time I was able to fly with any regularity. I enjoyed every flight I made on the Hercy-bird but one. That was when we were tasked with transporting the fatalities from Barcelona to Madrid when the ship ran over the liberty launch in Barcelona harbor... A sad, sad affair.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone that remembers me.

I was assigned to VR-24 Port Lyautey from June '56 - Mar. '58 as an AD3 in the shop under Chief Lancaster and Chief Payne as I remember. Some of the names I have seen in these postings are Waters, Ahern and Hardin. I was viewing the photos by Jack Bolger one that caught my eye was the one with Wells in it, if my memory is correct his first name is Decatur. While there I spent a lot of time with a couple of AM's McCarthy and Hardin. One of the memorable things we did was playing donkey ball. I would like to hear from anyone that served during that time especially if anyone knows the whereabouts of Floyd Hardin.

Hi,all! I was in VR-24 1984-1987, back when the Navy was real. Looking back, those were some of the best times and shipmates during my almost 26 year career. I made SeniorChief in 2003, but that was as far as my limited politally correct skills would take me. I married the most awesome man I've ever known, Chris. Going on 19 years now. No children, I have a hard enough time raising the ones the Navy has been recruiting. Including Senior Commanders, who whine and cry like pubecent teens when I brought him to tact my last Sig deployment in Aug, 2009. So, I got to retire a little early for assault on a "superior" officer. I was an AMSAN  in 1984 , then VAQ-129 1987-1990, short break in service, I worked narcotics and deputy patrol a few years until my husband got transfered to Texas. Then I went Aircrew on the C-9s. It has been a great ride. Would love to hear from all who remember me. Most called me 'Pete" back then.
