City, State: Orange Park, FL Comments: Just wanted to say Hi to a bunch of names I recognize. I was a VR-24 retread, 81-84, 87-91. Like so many others VR was my best duty in all 20 years. I think it was because the squadron was more like family than a duty station. People didn't just stop being squadron mates after you left the hanger. Like all of you that served with him, Jack Punches was the best. I'll never forget when the Skipper asked for us to load his cruise box t go to Saudi Arabia for X-mas det cycle. That box weighed a ton. Turns out Skipper Punches loaded it with beer to bring for his sailors to have some beer during the holidays.

City, State: Cloquet Minnesota Comments: Hi Everyone, I was in VR from 78-81, and again as an aircrewman from 84-87. I remember a lot of good times, and look forward to going to a reunion should one be organized in the next year or so. I'm all for seeing some of the old gang. Hope all are doing well.

City, State: New York, NY Comments: Hi Lou,
I graduated from Photo A School in early July 1958, and received orders to report to the Photo Lab at Port Lyautey, with one of my class mates named Schroder. But shortly after receiving the orders and before leaving the base I ran into a little trouble on a barracks security watch, not being alert for the four hours, and wound up in the brig. My orders were canceled and new orders were issued sending me to the USS Wasp which was on her way to Lebanon to join the UN mission sent there to protect the incumbent government. I started my trip from Quonset Point, RI, to Norfolk, boarded a Flying Tiger Airline plane and with stops at Bermuda, and the Azores, we landed at Port Lyautey. Our group was put in a transit unit and taken to the mess hall for lunch. As I started down the serving line the first server saw my stripes with the Photo designator, and asked me if my name was O’Brien, when I said yes he called to the back of the kitchen, calling Schroder, he came out smiling and jumping like a kid on Christmas morning spotting his new bike under the tree. He threw his white kitchen hat on my tray and was taking his apron off, while he told me that I was his relief, the chief at the lab told him that he would have to take the mess cook job till I arrived after my brig time was up then it would be my assignment. I told him not so fast “I am just passing through, I’m on my way to the Wasp”, I’ll never forget the look on his face, He was shattered. We went to the EM club that night and spent a few hours talking about happier times in school. The next day I drew a fence detail cleaning around the fence, and the next day I got on one of the VR-24 Planes and flew to Naples. I only spent 3 days at Port Lyautey but I have always thought of it as one of my main stops in life. I joined the Navy to go to sea and especially on a carrier, so actually the cancelling of my orders was more to what I really wanted, but if I had to get shore duty I would have loved to be part of the Port Lyautey family.
Best wishes,
Fred O’Brien PH3 USS Wasp CV-18

City, State: Carterville, IL Comments: Reading the comments and well wishes for the 4th, caused me for some reason to remembered my last 4th of July with VR-24. The squadron was on port and starboard, and I had the duty in 110. I can't remember if we had a prop change or an engine change, I just remember we were getting ready to ether pull or install the prop. As the guys began getting the prop sling ready, I noticed that the drum was not lined up properly which would keep the prop from being tilted. So I reached up and turned the drum freeing it from the "A" frame of the sling. I did not notice the 3 feet of slack that had been cranked into the chain and when I turned the drum the sling tilted forward pointing the sling toward the ground. Which in turn caused the retaining ring to slide forward. You guessed it. The ring slammed down on the lip of the drum catching the fingers on my left hand. OUCH!!! The kicker is that I was the safety rep. for the shop. What was worse, the finger which caught it all was the middle one. I walked around for 10 days with my finger bandaged and in a splint. Man, the digs I got from that one. I was a short timer and this all happened just a few weeks before I shipped out for the states. Good times, good times. VR-24 was the best duty I had. Be safe shipmates!
