City, State: Lexington Park, MD Comments: I sent out the text below to contacts that I knew from VQ, VRC-50, VR-24, and VR-21. After speaking with Dick he told me to just post it here. I hope you all enjoy your reunion in San Diego. Our VRC-50 Association sure did in 06. We will raise a glass to ya all at our September reunion in Branson. Hope to see/meet some of you in New Orleans.
VR-24 Association Mission Statement: “the goal of our Association is to enable all those who served in or supported VR-24 to continue into the future the friendships formed through that service” . http://www.vr-24.org/ VRC-50 Association Site Statement: "Dedicated to all former men and women of VRC-50" This site is dedicated to all our lost shipmates. May they always have fair winds and following seas. http://www.vrc-50.org/
The above statements from the VR-24 and VRC-50 websites pretty much says it all. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for all those who served in and/or supported squadrons that had C-130 aircraft to come together.
There were 17 Navy squadrons that operated C-130s. Four USN Reserve squadrons are still in operation today. I know that some of you served in 4 or 5 of these squadrons. Check out http://www.spectrumwd.com/c130/navy.htm
We have chosen New Orleans as the site to all come together. Mark your calendars for June 12th and 13th 2009. We are reviewing all of the proposals and will send out final details in the near future.
If you choose to be removed from future correspondence please reply with a “Remove from list”.
If you would enjoy getting together with old shipmates you served with in any of the 17 squadrons (no matter what your "primary platform" was please forward it on and help spread the word.
It is requested that webmasters of the different Associations post this notice and future updates to their sites and/or send out to mailing list. Please have all reply to hercs4ever@live.com U.S. Navy C-130 Reunion Organizers Dave Barry & John Jordan Check out: http://www.herkybirds.com/
City, State: Hamilton, Montana Comments: I was stationed at NAF Naples for almost 3 1/2 years in the early 60's and worked in the Air Terminal there. I did weights and Balance for most of the flights leaving Capo those days and can remember what a great bunch of guys VR-24 had. I went back to Naples with my wife four years ago and tried to find my way up to the base and got totally lost so I gave up. I understand it's really changed. It was good to find this site and look at the C1A's again along with the C-130's. Great memories. Stu Dobbins

City, State: Abell, MD Homepage URL: http://vr24_det_rota.tripod.com/vr24detrotashipmates Comments: VR-24 Det Rota Shipmates, They say the third time is a charm. Since I boned up the det's URL the first two times around this time I triple checked it for accuracy. Try http://vr24_det_rota.tripod.com/vr24detrotashipmates to get to the det's web page. The page will provide you with info on the 21 - 24 May 09 reunion in Duluth, MN [this is not for the parent squadron, just the det in Rota]. Sorry about the earlier confusion (actually, the previous two would have been deleted if I had authorization). Link Luego, Mike "Miguel" Barbour
City, State: Lawrence, KS Comments: I was in the squadron from 8/64 through 6/67. Was an ATN3 and flew as a Radioman. Really enjoyed the tour, especially the great people . City, State: Portland, OR Homepage URL: carpenterstax.com Comments: Hi - I was stationed at VR-24 Det Rota from April 1971 until Aug 1975. I had just got out of AK-A school when I arrived and left as an AK2. I ran the supply office with Patrick Kelly AK1, and Bob Seaman AK3 in the beginning and left the supply office with Jim Fleming AK1. I also remember a guy name Joe (Bananas), and Kay Rice as well as Brenda Pinkley. One of my favorite things was when someone wanted a "free" govt. pen, I would make them fill out a lost clothing form (of course I would't give them a pen to fill out the form with! VR-24 & Rota Spain was one of the highlights of my life. If you remember, I had a '68 Fiat 125 that was "Navy Grey" I had an apartment out in town, and from time to time would get called (the had to send someone out because Rota only had 999 phones, and I didn't have one) in at 3 am to order 3 engines for a C-130 that ran inot a flock of seagulls landing in Barcelona. C-130's can land with only one engine but can't take off. I got out of the Navy in Rota so I could fly home with my cat. In 2005 I took my wife of 27 years to Spain and we got a chance to visit the base. It's a shame they are closing it down. If you were in Rota send me an e-mail. It's Rose Festival here in Portland and I (with 2 of my boys) got to ride on the USS Lake Champlain from Astoria into Portland yesterday. It brought up a lot of memories. One of which was the aircraft carrier that came into port to have the antenna fixed on the top mast. I think it was Joe Bananas that managed to get me on that ship for a tour. I made sure it was sitting in 3 feet of mud before I went on. If anyone can remember the name of the carrier let me know. I think it was the Saratoga but I can't remember. City, State: Ramona, Ca Comments: Over the past weekend I uploaded seven new Scrapbook Naples pages containing forty-eight new photos, and added about a dozen new C1A photos. Have just updated the "Whats New Page" to reflect changes, so you can go direct to all the new/changed pages from the VR-24 Home Page. Check it out! I still have a few photos that I plan to post with short articles in new Ops Summary/Propwash Pages in the next few weeks. Am also looking for more photos and material for the web site. Thanks for your continued interest and support for the web site. Dick Prather, editor/manager |
