City, State: Kapolei, Hawaii Comments: What great memories come to mind as I scroll through your postings. Driving south on weekends, seeing Gibraltar and Africa, winding up in T-town, Torremolinos was a great experience. The bullfights in Sevilla were also great. What a great culture. I was there from 64 to 67, all great memories. I was an ATN-3 and crewmember. Flying all over the Med. was surreal, later I was deployed to West-Pac at Barbours Point,Hawaii. Being able to enjoy Waikiki and the North Shore was fantastic. All the people were great, well, some not so much. For me personally, it was the best of times.

City, State: Ramona, CA Comments: LCDR Norman L. Halladay was an R5D pilot based in Port Lyautey at the same time I was; Dec '57- Oct '60. I believe he passed away four or five years ago. I don't know if there was more than one bunch of VR-24 beer steins made but I believe around fifty were ordered in 1958 from "Baur's Camera and Souvanier Shop, Munich, Germany". The one I have has the 'Flying Mercury patch above gold Naval Aviator wings opposite the handle, "1957 WORLD'S BIGGEST LITTLE AIRLINES 1958" printed around the mug just below the lid, a full color CNO safety award patch above a detailed R5D aircraft against a red fez on the left side, and USN + a list of 30 destinations on the right side. There is an image of a seated nude young woman molded into the bottom. The image is "tastefully done" and only visible when the mug is held up to the light. They are all have the owner's name in gold on the bottom flange/skirt; and all are signed underneath by the illustrator. Mine has a small freehand Roman numeral XIV near the illustrator's name. Though attractive with gold leaf and bright colors, the steins/mugs would probably not make the cut as real works of art. But they were good quality for the time and money when made. As collectibles, I have no idea what they are worth today. I have managed to hang onto my stein all these years. It reminds me of what a great squadron VR-24 was.
City, State: Piedmont, Alabama Comments: In ref. to the VR-24 stein on eBay, I found out that each squadron mate had his own name put on their stein. This particular one belonged to NORMAN L. HALLADAY if anyone remembers him.

City, State: Piedmont, Alabama Comments: Fellow VR-24 squadronmates, Just this morning (Fri. 6/8/12) a VR-24 STEIN was posted on eBay for bids. It is very ornate and seems to be in great condition. It is from the 1957-58 era. Has a list of all the ports of call, picture of an R5D?, and other designs. Go to eBay-type in 190688636335. There are lots of pics. It is a bit pricey, but very unique. End time of the auction is 6/14/12 at 17:31:05 PDT.
City, State: Milton,Florida Homepage URL: att Comments: Reguarding Willie Barr's comment that he flew on VR 24's C119's and C130's as a VR 24 Det member. Their were no Det crews flying those aircraft. I was in VR 24 Port Lyautey from April 1959 til Dec. 1962 as an ADR2 flying on all of our planes as an plane/capt./eng. The only VR 24 planes the Det. crewed were our R5D's/ C54's. i.e. 56521. Most of the det. folks wanted nothing to do with our "Q" Birds.
City, State: pensacola, fl Comments: Ed Straten here, VR-24 alumni 1974-75. I was T-39 plank owner, maintenance crew, and Aircrew under Captain Hatch. Worked for Chief Harding and remember many a drink with Ron (Bo) Irwin. Irwin really sucked at darts. The reunion sounds great and I plan on going. Will be staying at the Monte Carlo if all goes as planned. Hope to see a face that I actually recognize. I am now in my sixties with gray hair and a few more pounds than I like to admit. See you there. |
