City, State: Daphne, Alabama Comments: I remember the warnings about not being on the streets at 12 am on new years eve. I did'nt heed, and nearly got hit by items chucked out of windows, rooftops, etc. Great duty station. Was there 54-55 and 72-73
City, State: Woodbridge, VA. 22192 Comments: I was in VR24Det from Aprial 1960 to December 1962. I was in Aicraft Maintiance for repair of all Airrcraft assigned. R5D, Cod C1, C119 and C130. I was Aircrew on R5D, C119 and C130.To answer Neal Scofield question on May Day. how could you forget the way they toss things out into streets burn buses. I like my stay in Naples.
City, State: Tucson, Arizona Comments: I was asigned to VR-24 from 1961 to 1963 in the disbursing office as a DK2. Spent my duty assignment between Capo and the "Hill" in Naples. My one recollection was of looking down on the field and watching as foam was put down on the runway. A jet from a carrier made a wheels up landing. I took a look of the jet in the hanger on stands, she was repaired in just a few days. There did not seem to be much damage to the undercarriage. My family and I were staying in a hotel on the Hill waiting to go back to the states when President Kennedy was killed. Does anyone remember May Day, stay home and do not go out on the streets, our apartment was in the middle of an anti-American neighborhood.

City, State: Marietta, GA Comments: Hello all, I had the very good fortune to get stationed in Napoli from 1972 -1975 with VR-24 in the airframes/hydraulics shop. Requested SE Asia and got sent to Italy! Was young and dumb. I soon came to realize that I had won the lottery. Must have gone to my head because I got real stupid and jumped into the drugs with both feet. Took till 1985 before I got clean. Still am today. I let down a lot of very good and dedicated people in the squadron and for that I will always be sorry. With that said part of me still longs to go back to those days and ways because they were probably the best days of my life. Working on aircraft, travelling europe partying like rock stars..... not to mention ducati's (I was a fool, I had two BSA's), alfa's, ferrari's the occasional lotus and the food! Must also acknowledge that the women of Italy and the med are truly beautiful.
City, State: Homosassa, FL Comments: I was just advised concerning the VR 24 Web page by a shipmate with whom I attended NATTC, Norman, OK in 1955. We both, along with 15 other classmates (all alphabetically) upon graduation, were transferred to VR-24 Det. in Naples, Italy where I spent Dec 55 to Aug 59 as a member of the VR-24 "family". It was a great time to be in Naples especially if you were 18 years old as we all were. I'm still in touch with two of my classmates after all these years. I have attended several VR-24 reunions from California, Minnesota, Florida, New Jersey, etc. and look forward to attending the one scheduled for October of this year in Las Vegas. Hopefully, I will be able to get my two classmates to also attend. Regards to all
City, State: West Collingswood Heights, NJ Comments: Hello All! I was in the VR-24 Squadron in 1969. I remember being in Rota Spain at Benny's Bar watching the moon landing along with a ton of other memories. I made a lot of great friends during that time as well. I am the original "Walrus" coo coo ca choo!
City, State: San Jose, CA & Bigfork, MT Comments: I probably visit the site once a year. Always fun to read the guestbook entries. I was at Hendon in '53 briefly and then to Bella Napoli til 55. Still share some great reminiscences but have not found many of my shipmates from that time. Hell, there probably all dead! or computer illiterates! Ha. Just recently joined the vr24 page at facebook. Pretty neat. If you are in the area of Glacier National Park in Montana give me a call at 406-837-1402 and I'll put the pot on. We're there from April to November. I have been back to Naples in 1980, 1990 and 2001. Still one of our favorites. Ralph AE1, VR-24 Det, Fasron77, VW-2 & VP91. |
