City, State: Rockford, IL Comments: We Are VR!! I have a lot of good memories of VR-24 and "The VOD Squad" from 81 - 84. I was an AD3 with VOD and later with VR-24 C1's and C2's. So many great TAD's to Souda, Larnaca Cypruss, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Rota and Naples. Has anyone heard from Kruetzfelt? I believe he was an AE. Still hoping someone has located Dave Lower - I have a lot of good memories with him and his buddy Dimmick. Thanks to all those who have put this page up and keep visiting. Best Regards, Randal Stowell
City, State: Orlando, Florida Comments: It is with deep sadness that I report that one of our shipmates Jerome Tyra passed away on 21 September 2011 in Winfield, Alabama. He was attached to VR-24 Det Naples from Mar 64 - Oct 66. He was a great guy and we had good times back in the old days of VR-24 Naples, Italy. He will be missed by all.
City, State: PORT ALBERNI B.C. CANADA Comments: Hi Iam Steve Roberts I was in VR-24 from JUNE 1966 to AUG 1968.
City, State: Katy, TX Comments: Hello, my name is Ed Baker and I was stationed in Rota from June of 1967 till September 1969. I worked in the Cal Lab and made around 25 TAD trips providing calibration services for the fleet...from Rota to Naples, Nice, Cyprus, Morocco, Sig, UK and back to Rota VR-24 was the squadron that got our team and equipment from Point A to Point B and back to Point A. Had two experiences during all of those flights that I remember: 1. Lost pressurization on one flight (C-130) and ended up with a ruptured ear drum and, 2. Pilot elected to takeoff from Naples knowing AC was overloaded and shortly after takeoff lost a governor on one engine. He trimmed everything up and got to cruise alt but just about the time we got to midway point returning to Rota, the governor failed and with only 3 engines we started losing alt. Shortly thereafter another Eng governor failed and we were on 2 engines - at the time he ordered the flight engineer to feather the failing engine, the copilot chopped fuel to one of the remaining engines by mistake (panic?) and we were on one good engine and one feathered engine BOTH ON PORT WING! The AC dropped like a rock with the pilot recovering at about FL2. We were near Palma Marroca at that time and the pilot call for a May Day landing. On approach the pilot realizing he could not land safely (to far up the runway and mountains at the end) did a missed approached. As the AC climbed out there was a lot of banging on the underside of the AC which turned out to be from the AC hitting the tops of olive trees! A second attempt was successful. Next day another C-130 borough parts and maintenance team and got the AC up and ready for return to Rota. Oh yes, we drank a lot of beer / wine that evening. If anyone remembers this event, please contact me as my memory is now somewhat fuzzy on names but I believe it was during the summer of 1968 but might have been 69. Best Regards, Ed Baker USN AE Rating 1966 - 1974
