City, State: Hanover, PA Comments: I served as Radioman at Comfairelm, Naples, Italy from 1959-1960 - am visiting Naples in September and would like to visit some of the same sites. Any information out there?
City, State: Port Orange FL Comments: Hello All I served with VR24 from 1964 to1966,my first duty station,I just turned 18 and it was my first time overseas Boy did i learn allot!
City, State: Worton, MD Comments: By golly ! A lot of you guys keep returning to this site. Thanks. I think I have the answer to the "Green Stripe". Everyone agrees that it was a distinction for many years - not months - of flying safety. With over 20 years in Navy aviation I can tell you that I have never seen this mark on any other aircraft. Not only did we enjoy our time in VR-24, we contributed to and lived with a legend. Now, my plea - again. Someone or group start working up a reunion for 2011 and on. All it will take is just one to get the ball rolling and I just know help will be plentiful.
City, State: Doylestown, PA Comments: I was an AT and a member of VR-24 and FASRON 77 from August 1952 to October 1953; I transferred from Hendon to Naples in January, 1953 along with several shipmates, including Paul Muster and Robert Lopez. Many of us were recalled to the States as the Korean War "ended". I was discharged on October 14, 1953. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who remembers me and those days in the squadron.
City, State: Worton, MD Comments: Second posting for the day. Can any of you old salts tell me the signifigance of the 'Green Stripe' on the vertical stabalizer of the R4Ds and the R5Ds. If I knew it, I have forgotten it. This is driving me nuts. One source said it might be there because an older (1940s ) OinC had Irish connections and wanted an Irish green stripe on the tails. I've also heard it was some kind of an award but, what award? The stripe was never on any of the other squadron aircraft - only the R4s & R5s. Someone out there knows. Pete! Where are you when we need you ? That's why we need reunions - to keep the legends alive !!
City, State: Worton, Maryland Comments: I'm one of the old guys - back again. For those that don't know, I was in Port Lautey 57- 59 and Naples Det 61-63. Not too many of us around anymore. The reunions are / were very important to us. Alas, we just can't fill Pete Owens shoes and revive them. Maybe one or two of you younger guys can see your way through and make it happen again. There are so many 'sea stories' left untold and reunions are the place to let it all hang out. If the urge strikes you - get in touch with Dick Prather. He maintains this outstanding web site and probably know more VR-24 members than the law allows. If anyone cares to, I'd be happy to swap yarns with you.
City, State: Maple Grove, MN 55311 Homepage URL: johndor1@msn.com Comments: I joined VR-24 in Port Lyautey in mid 1951 and left late 1954. I worked in the AT shop as a electronics tech. I worked with guys like Bob Mandel, Harold King, Labute, Moran, and Lanagan, more but, can't remember names.I recall my duty there as the best. I returned to Minnesota, eceived a degree in Electrical Engineering, worked for Unisys, Banner Engineering and now retired. Anyone remembering me, give a growl. John Pastre
City, State: Fenton, Missouri Comments: Hello, I was stationed at Sigonella in VR-24 from November 1978 until December 1981. I was TAD to AIMD during my tour at VR-24. Later I returned to Sigonella from 1987 until 1990, and worked in OMD. My tours in VR-24 and OMD were the best times of my life, and I have vacationed in Catania several times since I retired in November 1998. I was there when our motto was (We are VR).
City, State: Heidelberg, Germany Comments: I visited the Catania area the last two weeks of June. I stayed on the mountain which was nice, the city is more congested that ever. Saw some old friends, one is an American that decided to live there. I would have stayed in the 80's but life intervened. I may retire there but work keeps me in Germany. The base is almost completely rebuild since the 80's, I think it will be there for a while. The old hanger is still there as a tech library, with new buildings connecting to it. There is so much to see and do there, and a culture rich in history. I wish more people would take advantage of it. More locals people speak english but were happy that I speak Sicilian. You are treated better if you speak the language. It's worth the effort to go visit if you can. |
